Resumen

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Process control is required to obtain the best stability and productivity of any industrial bioprocess. However, bioprocess control described in previous works is mostly focused on instrumentation as online sensors and analyzers available to monitor the process, but there is a lack of information about the control loops available for these processes. This chapter focuses on describing classical and more advanced control loops that are available for improving the response of bioprocesses against disturbances and variations in the operational set point, ensuring its stability. Classical feedback control loops for basic variables such as dissolved oxygen and pH are usually applied in these systems, but there are other controllers such as feedforward, cascade, ratio, override, and adaptive that can be useful when applied correctly. Classical and advance control structures are described in this chapter and examples of their application in bioprocesses are presented.
