Resumen

The main results of an integrated study of 5 boreholes drilled (the maximum depth of twenty-five meters from the p.c.) in the subsurface of the Salviano surroundings are reported (Livorno). The analyses performed included lithological- sedimentological observations, macro and micropalaeontological investigations. Stratigraphic interpretation of the 5 investigated boreholes allowed to distinguish 5 main lithostratigrahic units; these are, from the base: - U nit 1: sandy silts and fine sands with continental ostracod associations characteristics of upper Messinian (Loxocorniculina djafarovi Zone).- U nit 2: fossiliferous sand and calcarenitic layer. Ostracod assemblage indicates litoral environment. This unit can be referred to Middle Pleistocene on the base of stratigraphical remarks. - U nit 3: silt and fossiliferous sands with carbonate glaebules. Land snails and fresh water faunas (mollusc and ostracods) are recorded in this unit. - U nit 4: silt, sand and gravel. This unit can be correlated with fluvial environment «Conglomerati di Rio Maggiore » formation outcropping in the neighborous (Upper Pleistocene). - U nit 5: red sandy silts and silty sands can be correlated with Sabbie di Ardenza Formation (Upper Pleistocene). The examinated succession allows to improve the subsurface knowledge of Livorno surroundings.
