Introduction of tropical germplasm in forage maize breeding

Resumen

Crosses between late tropical populations and adapted inbreds of maize (Zea mays) were compared in order to identify superior combinations for the development of late forage semi-exotic hybrids adapted to the mild mediterranean climate and for irrigated cultivation. Forage yield and quality traits were studied in progeny of 3 top crosses with a common control cultivar, involving 44 exotic populations and the inbred testers B73 and Mo17. Highest ear yields were obtained by crosses involving Tuxpeño, Cateto and Compuesto Centroamericano A with B73. The best semi-exotic combinations for digestible dry matter were B73 × La Posta (140% of the control Mo17 × B73), B73 × Brazil 1771 (138%) and B73 × V465 (136%).
