Resumen

The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) via mixed microbial cultures (MMC) and waste activated sludge (WAS) as substrate, integrated into urban wastewater treatment, is attracting considerable research interest due to the WAS overabundance and its related disposal problems.

In this context, the purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art on PHA production and its integration into urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with a circular economy perspective. A review of studies that evaluated the economic aspects of PHA production from sewage sludge, suggesting its cost-effectiveness, is presented. Finally, future research directions, that are crucial to achieve an extensive large-scale application of this process, are suggested.
