Global borders: A gender interpretation

This chapter focuses on the connection between female labor and gender relations in Mexico's northern border region, and makes reference to the border region of Tangiers in Morocco, with the goal of showing the similarities and differences between the two regions. It describes the gender relations in border areas and focuses on women's maquiladora work in the context of gender studies. The chapter explains the analytical framework that should be created that considers macro structural, institutional, and socio-individual factors, subjectivity, and identity processes, with an emphasis on the socio-historical process and the system of gender social relations that characterize it. It discusses the theoretical and conceptual approaches and empirical studies signal that the changes in women's participation in labor markets, their influence on family life, and the position of women are the result of multiple conditions that have been generated in different areas and levels of reality.
