N2 - The huaben, stories written to be read appear in the 17 th century thanks to a rich oral storytelling tradition. Feng Menglong (1574-1646), writer and editor with a China-wide reputation, was one of this genre's most important promoters. This narrations perfectly echo history, the traditional Chinese calendar and rites, the complex administrative system and also include historical or legendary characters. It is obvious that this features present certain difficulties when translating the huaben: syntactical and lexical problems, rhetorical figures which do not always exist in the target language, a symbolism which the translation's reader finds difficult understand, a mix of language registers and expressive resources. In our translation, we have tried to take a mean position between the adaption of the story to our cultural context and the imposition of the original one.
