Sincronía y diacronía de la definición en los diccionarios monolingües generales del español

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

This doctoral thesis consists of a synchronic and diachronic study of the definition in the general monolingual dictionaries of Spanish, specifically, in the dictionaries of the Real Academia Española and in the representative non academic dictionaries bet ween the eighteenth century and the twenty first century. The first chapter of the thesis is dedicated to the explanation of some basic questions within the theoretical framework of lexicography, delimiting the concept of the definition, clarifying the use of terminology and reviewing the relevant approaches to the typology of the definition in language dictionaries. Then, in the second chapter, the objectives of the research are exposed, which consist of discovering how the definitions are at different sta ges of the hisotria of Spanish lexicography, how they have evolved and how they should be in a general monolingual dictionary. In accordance with the established objectives, a corpus of sample definitions has been developed, as well as the methodology for carrying out the analysis. In the third chapter, the sample definitions are examined in several important aspects, namely in the formal features with respect to the distinction between real definition , nominal definition or linguistic definition, in the m etalanguage used and in the formal structure of the definition regarding the use of synonyms, periphrasis and remissions. Each aspect is analyzed with a diachronic study of the dictionaries of the Academy and with a synchronous comparison of academic and non academic dictionaries. Finally, in chapter four, the conclusions obtained from the analysis of the definitions are expose d: the evolution of the definition in academic dictionaries is traced , the convergences and divergences between academic and non ac ademic dictionaries in the aspects examined are identified, the general trends of the evolution of the definition are abstracted, according to which , some suggestions for the future definition in general monolingual dictionaries of Spanish are proposed.
