Personality disorders (PD) are enduring and inflexible patterns of behavior, that cause significant distress or functional impairment. DSM and CIE classifications have provided during the past decade the criteria for PD diagnosis; but because they are based on expert’s agreement and psychiatric tradition, none of them fulfills the minimum requirements of reliability and validity that would be expected of a diagnostic system. For this reason, classifications based on categories are backing away, and the main focus goes to dimensional models. Nevertheless, these models have also received criticisms, such as their inability to cover all the range of personality pathology; break with previous knowledge; disregard of hierarchical structure; lack of criteria for disorder and the use of self-report as the unique assessment tool. In this study, we suggest a factorial reorganization of DSM axis II at the diagnostic criteria level – through the self-report PDQ-4+- as a way to produce an evidence-based model of personality pathology, which would overcome some of the criticisms addressed to dimensional models. Additionally, the study of a posterior interview that complements self-report could provide some guidance to combine both methods and thus improve personality pathology assessment.
