Background and hypothesis: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a very prevalent health problem that affect more than 150 million people, mainly women, with a recurrence rate greater than 30%. The intestinal microbiota forms a delicate balance and its different composition could be a predisposing factor for the recurrence of urinary tract infections. In this study we propose to explore the existing differences in the composition of the intestinal and vaginal microbiota that can explain the predisposition to suffer recurrent UTIs (UTIr) in a certain group of women.
