Reconocimiento y Comprensión De La Pauta Relacional De La Violencia Urbana No Delictiva (VUND) A La Luz Del Diálogo Entre Saberes

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

The present doctoral thesis aims to make visible and understand the Non-Criminal Urban Violence (NUV) phenomenon, which refers to violence among citizens, disconnected from crime, experienced in relationships dynamics which occur in public spaces. Characteristics of this phenomenon are explored in the urban context of Bogotá and Barcelona through a mixed-method study of multiple cases with five participants from each city. Theoretically, it is approached through a dialogue among different fields of knowledge: Watzlawick's communication theory, systemic theory, the South's epistemologies, complexity theories, ancestral worldview of the Carare Community, as well as Gandhi's non-violence stance, cooperativism, and collective intelligence. By the other hand, it is used for data collection, a self-perception instrument of NUV; the STAXI2 (State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory) to evaluate the tendency toward anger as a state or trait, with the intention to identify its relationship with the NUV perception, and an individual semi-structured interview with each participant. Qualitative data analysis is realized through categorical content analysis, examining participants perceptions and narratives considering the categories (NUV and non-violent coexistence) and research subcategories. Quantitative analysis of STAXI2 results is made from a descriptive statistical analysis. The results allow to approach to NUV as a complex phenomenon, influenced by multiple relational, cultural, and personal factors, but with differences in the communication patterns and characteristics between Bogotá and Barcelona. The STAXI2 results suggest a relationship between profiles that tend to exhibit anger in their temperament (mainly in Bogotá citizens) with a higher NUV perception in their city, while in Barcelona, it is shown profiles with a higher index of external anger control and a lower NUV perception. NUV is understood as the convergence of multiple macrosocial and cultural factors, recognizing communication patterns between citizens characterized by a perception of distrust (in the case of Bogotá residents) mediated by a sense of insecurity primarily linked to robbery and crime rates. About the relationship patron, is notable symmetric escalations with anger intensity, generating rejection towards others, among Bogotá residents. Citizens from Barcelona tend to generate complementary patterns related to the disconfirmation of migrant's selves, who tend to respond submissively. Finally, it is identified that although all participants express the no intention to harm others, the tools, and modes to achieve this are not clear. Therefore, strategies for NUV intervention are suggested, which are from reviewing public policies, to redefining public spaces, campaigns promoting cooperativism and non-violence, and the creation of anger management centers as a form of prevention against the violence proliferation, and the recognition by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a type of violence that requires attention, and the consequent disposition of the governments to face it.
