Manuductio ad conuersionem Mahumetanorum, pars secunda. In qua Falsitas Mahumetanae sectae conuincitur de Tirso González. Edición y estudio

    Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

    Abstract

In 1687 the theologian, missionary and 13th Superior General of the Society of Jesus Tirso González de Santalla (1624-1705) published Manuductio ad conuersionem Mahumetanorum. This work, whose full title is Manuductio ad conuersionem Mahumetanorum, in duas partes diuisa. In prima, Veritas Religionis Christianae Catholicae Romanae manifestis argumentis demonstratur. In secunda, Falsitas Mahumetanae sectae conuincitur, is the result of his experience as a missionary for two decades throughout the Iberian peninsular territory and of his knowledge as a professor of theology. The work is written as a manual for the training of Christian preachers, while at the same time it aims to offer help to those believers who seek to reaffirm their faith. On the one hand, Tirso defends in the first part the divinity of Christ against the heretics, Jews and Muslims who deny it, affirming, later, that the only true church is the Roman Catholic Church, as opposed to Luther, Calvin and the proliferation of Protestant churches. On the other hand, he focuses on the second part of the work on Islamological issues, providing information on the life and teachings of Muhammad, the religious principles and practices of Islam, and a refutation of Muslim objections to Christianity. The aim of this doctoral thesis, therefore, is to offer the first modern philological edition focusing on the second part of the Manuductio, preceded by a study that places the work in its historical and literary context.
