L'arpa i la lira a Mallorca: iconografia, simbolisme i relació amb la poesia de Costa i Llobera i Joan Alcover

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

This work is a study of the iconography of the two musical instruments, the harp and the lyre, in the art of the Medieval Age up until the twenty first century. We will see the representation of the images of these string instruments in paintings and sculptures in Mallorca and how we relate them to the poetry of Miquel Costa i Llobera and Joan Alcover i Maspons, and we will observe how these musical instruments appear in their work. Furthermore, the analysis of the iconography of these instruments, allow us to notice the morphological evolution of the harp to establish different typologies of the lyre. We also realize that their images contribute to the discovery of the profound symbolic significance manifested also in the poetry. We see that most of the representations of the harp are in religious contexts, and for this reason we realise the strong influence of the ecclesiastic power. However, the influence of classical culture is also evident, because we observe that, especially the lyre is an attribute that mythological and pagan characters carry.
