The purpose of this thesis has been to characterize Catalan translation studies by analyzing the main factors of development from the 19th century to the present day. In this sense, it has been necessary to analyze the most relevant contributions in this period, to establish the most remarkable defining features and to describe Catalan translation studies, according to the most significant stages, within the framework of Western European translation studies. The results obtained reveal certain singularities that emerge as idiosyncratic features of contemporary Catalan translation studies. Among these, the following stand out: translation as a constituent of the foundations of the contemporary Catalan language, together with the Pompeu Fabra normative; empirical reflection as the intellectual substratum of translation theory; the subjection of translation to the political polysystemic context; the language model as the main defining feature; the influence of Josep Carner as the main establisher of stylistic parameters, replacing a group of representatives following the Italian model of the 14th century or the French model of the 16th century, and the publication of four biblical translations within a few years, a cultural peculiarity unique in the world.
