La prosa autodiegética: Carlos Barral por sí mismo

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

Within the varied literary production of Carlos Barral (1928-1989), his prose is rather consigned to oblivion, hidden by his vocation as a poet and his well-known role as a publisher. Despite this, both Barral’s trilogy of memoirs, Años de penitencia (1975), Los años sin excusa (1978) and Cuando las horas veloces (1988), and his novel, Penúltimos castigos (1983), show a renewed prose which feeds itself on the French and English heritages to push the boundaries of the genre of autobiography. Assuming his aesthetic principles which were first reflected in his poetry, Barral develops an autobiographical discourse based on the concept of «la metódica inexactitud» and on some particular features such as the usage of litotes, in order to represent his diverse roles and to recreate himself in a literary frame, by just being faithful to the natural course of his memories.
