Despite being less frequently studied than other devises for visual display, such as the photo-book or the World fairs, newspapers were the decisive device in configuring, divulging and consolidating the photographic image during the 19th century in many countries across the world. This work describes and provides documental evidence of the formal diversity with which photographic information appeared in periodical publications; it also proposes a classification of the layout of the images in these publications. In terms of method, the work focuses on the newspapers published between 1840 and 1914 in Colombia, and prioritizes visual research strategies for exploring the primary sources consulted, and/or tracing relations with contemporary information. Throughout every chapter, I question the recurring way in which the criteria for determining the limits of the temporal space, the comprehensiveness and pertinence of academic research are assumed.
