In this work we try to comprehend the processes of televidencias of audiences in the context of inter-culturality. Focusing in the inter-culturality is neither redundant nor arbitrary. There is a rich literature dedicated to comparative studies of TV audiences in different countries, that is, in different cultural contexts, but none centered in the intersection between inter-culturality and televidencia. In this regard, we believe the most novel contribution of our work resides in the intersection of these two processes of social production of significance. This thesis is divided in three parts. In the First Part we describe the construction of the object of study, what we mean by audiences and, more specifically, by multi-cultural audiences. In addition, which is the socio-cultural context that calls our attention and gives rise to the main question of investigation. Which were the tentative answers, in the form of hypothesis, and the methodological draft of the investigation, with particular emphasis in giving analytic priority to the situational mediation of the interaction processes between audiences and television. The Second Part contains two broad sections, each dedicated to one of our two variables: televidencia and inter culturality. In the first section we present an archeology of the cultural studies of anglo-saxon and latin-american audiences. From the perspective of Foucalt's archeology we develop one possible reconstruction of the cultural studies of anglo-saxon and latin-american audiences as discursive formation. In the second section we deepen in the multiple relations among the processes of globalization, multi-culturality and nationalism that constitute the inter-cultural scenario of contemporary societies, and obviously, of our research. Aside from the re-construction of these discursive formations and the description of the inter-cultural scenario, the main goal of this second part was two-sided. Firstly, the relocation of the studies of audiences as a problematic that exceeds the specific domain of communication and pierce into social sciences in general, by trying to comprehend the processes of reproduction or change of the social relations of dominance. Secondly, we establish a theoretical framework to understand and comprehend the interaction of audiences and television in the intersection of inter-culturality. In the Third Part, once the basis were established, we show the analysis and interpretation of the study of five multi-cultural audiences in inter-cultural situation. It was carried out in Barcelona during the first semester of 2004. We approach these audiences from the model of multiple mediation developed by Orozco Gómez, through a qualitative methodology strategy. The inquire that guided our research was the following: How do the processes of televidencia develop in multi-cultural audiences in inter-cultural situations ? We conclude this work with a discussion that highlights the main contributions of the cultural studies to the studies of audiences and, from that context, the principal findings of our field research. From here we risk a characterization of the processes of interaction between television and multicultural audiences in situations of inter-culturality. Among other results of our work, we would like to highlight the principal variables that characterize the process of televidencia in the intersection with the process of inter-culturality: 1) non-familiarity (non-familiarity between audiences and audiovisuals referents as well as non-familiarity among the subjects that form our audiences) ; 2) brake-up of common sense that, far from being correspondent with the conflict presented by many of the occident first world theoreticians is praised in a positive way by the subjects that conform these audiences and perceived as a way to brake with the limits imposed by the cultural frameworks of the society itself.
