Essays on the influence of schooling on artisanal fishing in Colombia.

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

Generally, the lack of alternative income opportunities is a problem that affects the smallscale_x000D_ fisheries, both marine and inland. Due to this, laborers in the activity intensify the_x000D_ fishing effort. Thereof, some findings have shown that solutions to this problem might be_x000D_ found outside the activity. Usually, communities that depend on this activity are located in_x000D_ remote rural areas, with very few employment opportunities tending to include non-skilled,_x000D_ poor, and landless people who rely their livelihoods only on fishing. Then, open access_x000D_ fisheries are considered as a last resort for fishing households when a failure to obtain a_x000D_ different source of income exists._x000D_ This research aims to explain that investing in education helps to avoid depletion of_x000D_ resource-based economies. Then, it is argued that investing in education promotes efficient_x000D_ management of resources, eliminates the negative effect caused by a resource boom,_x000D_ encourages technological improvement, and increases the possibility of substitution_x000D_ between production factors and economic activities._x000D_ Accordingly, by enhancing the set of capabilities such as education, fishermen can diversify_x000D_ their livelihood activities strengthening their income, ensuring the community development_x000D_ and reducing their vulnerability._x000D_ Under this premise, this research presents findings from three case studies from small-scale_x000D_ fishing communities from Colombia. The objective of this research is to contribute to the_x000D_ discussion by arguing that solutions for the problem regarding the pressure on fisheries can_x000D_ also be found by enhancing human capital and providing different economic opportunities_x000D_ of fishing communities.
