Entre porncepciones y appxxxperiencias.Un análisis de los efectos autopercibidos de la pornografía gay mainstream en usuarios de aplicaciones móviles de sexo-afecto

Abstract

This thesis on media, communication, and culture subline gender, communication, and media, studies how consumers of mainstream gay pornography, who are at the same time users of dating apps, perceive how this content affects them directly and indirectly. Analyzing the self-perception of the effects of these cultural products from four specific dimensions built from the fieldwork. This research investigates how consumers consider that pornography influences their interactions within and encounters from dating or/and cruising apps. It also analyses how the consumption of porn influences the lifestyles of the users of cruising or/and dating apps and modifies their ways of perceiving and understanding sexuality, of bonding with others and understanding themselves. The study is based on semi-directed interviews with fifty-four gay porn consumers, who are also users of dating or/and cruising apps living in the city of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) and Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires (Argentina). This research, of an explanatory nature, follows an interpretative, qualitative and ethnographic paradigm. The investigation puts into discussion gay pornography, leaving medical and/or psychological perspectives and any analysis of the images themselves, to focus on the self-perception of effects and the impact of pornography on the sexuality of gay men users of cruising and/or dating apps. This thesis reflects on gay pornography as an industry, as a producer of representations, as a producer of what is expected in sexual encounters and as a developer of affectations while exposing the relationships between these productions and the existing logics within virtual spaces for sexual encounters.
