Abstract

This thesis presents a typology of the effects of the title on the text in poetry which is illustrated trough a corpus of contemporary Catalan poems. The typology proposed is based, first, on the author's assumptions about the title (chapter 2), and, second, on a critical review of various proposals about the title without the text (chapter 3), and, particularly, about the main typologies of relations between the title and the text (chapter 4).
Chapter 1 shows the relevance of the work in the frame of the studies about poetry reading.
Chapter 2 approaches the object showing (1) the various definitions of the title, (2) the parallelism between on the one hand the effect of the title on the reader and on the other hand the concept of Verfremdungseffekt, as proposed by Bertolt Brecht, and (3) the paper of the title in the process of reading. On the other hand, the author analyses the consequences of describing the title either as a paratext or as an strategic element. Finally, he explores the functions traditionally associated to the title: designative, metalinguistic, and seductive.
Chapter 3 revises several studies of corpus of titles, that is, studies that do not take the text, or the semantic link between the title and text, into account.
Chapter 4 evaluates seven typologies of relations between the title and the text taking into account the Isenberg conditions for developing a typology. It demonstrates that none of these typologies is completely satisfactory.
Chapter 5 presents a typology of the terminal and global effects of the title on the text in poetry. A first distinction is given between neutral and non neutral titles. Secondly, non neutral titles are classified in several types: focussing, thematic, contrasting, contextualizing, and mystifying. 48 contemporary Catalan poems illustrate this typology.
Finally, chapter 6 summarizes the contents of the previous chapters and presents some perspectives for the study about the title which have not being considered in this thesis.
