In recent years, internet-based social media platforms have emerged as pivotal tools within technological society, playing a fundamental role not only in information acquisition but also in the dissemination of novel events, thereby establishing a new platform for exchange and interaction among individuals, unrestricted by temporal or geographical boundaries. The overarching aim of this research centers on investigating and comprehending the role of social media, specifically exemplified through the paradigmatic case of Twitter, as a communication medium within our society, focusing particularly on discourse surrounding immigration in Spain to explore its influence on the construction of social reality. The findings of this study have been interpreted through a lens of critical discourse analysis, leading to the conclusion that the discourse observed on Twitter contributes to a negative perception of immigration as it reinforces group dynamics rooted in stark alterity between the outgroup and the ingroup. This intensification of otherness is facilitated, on one hand, through the crystallization process of media discourse within the Twitter environment, and on the other hand, due to a lack of alternative narratives justifying the positive contributions of immigration. Both elements contribute to the consolidation and dissemination of negative conceptions surrounding immigration in Spain.
