This study aims to integrate pedagogic translation tasks into Spanish-language teaching and learning in China in order to develop intercultural competence. To this end, firstly, we designed seven units that include Chinese-Spanish or Spanish-Chinese translation tasks, focused on different cultural and thematic aspects of the Hispanic world. Secondly, we conducted an empirical study with a group of 36 students from the BA in Hispanic Philology at the University of Communication, Nanjing, whose Spanish proficiency ranged from A2-B2. The tasks were implemented over a two-month period. Lastly, to assess the effectiveness of the proposal, we employed: (1) pre- and post- intervention self-assessments of student’s knowledge of the cultural references; (2) analysis of the student’s performance based on the grades obtained in the units; and (3) feedback provided by the students as well as by four Spanish-language teachers from universities in China. Based on the results, we revised and refined the teaching units accordingly.
