This doctoral thesis titled Efectos del Programa de Asesoramiento Personalizado a Entrenadores (PAPE) de baloncesto en sus comportamientos e influencias sobre el clima motivacional, la autoestima y la ansiedad de los jugadores (Effects of Individualized Program for Counseling Coaches (PAPE) on basketball coaches behaviors, and influences on motivational climate, self-esteem and anxiety of the players) has been developed by a compendium of publications. The objectives of this thesis are based on the need to know the effectiveness of PAPE (Sousa et al., 2006) in another team sport different to the initial work, in this case, basketball. It aims to verify their effectiveness in improving communication style and motivational climate created by coaches on their teams and to assess the influence of the program on individual aspects of the players. The study published in the Journal Apunts d’Educació Física i Esport (Mora, Sousa and Cruz, 2014) is intended as a starting point, in terms of an overall analysis of the study variables and supports the subsequent intervention with coaches. This paper aims to describe the motivational climate (generated by coaches and peers), self-esteem and anxiety of youth basketball players, in turn analyzing the relationship between these variables and observing whether there are differences in the motivational climates among child-youth players and cadets. The article published in the Journal Infancia y Aprendizaje (Mora, Cruz and Sousa, 2013), meets the objective to justify the relevance of PAPE for use with basketball coaches, analyzing the influence of these in the variables on, making generalization also in the context of Physical Education. The third aim of the thesis is to evaluate the effects of individualized intervention with five coaches and more detail as a case study with two coaches to see if changes are produced in their communication style in behavioral categories self-chosen by them as targets, and in the perceptions’ of players and coaches. This objective is presented in the paper accepted for its publication in the Journal Revista de Psicología del Deporte (Cruz, Mora, Sousa and Alcaraz, 2016). The main results show that all coaches get improvements in both behaviors that were set as goals after the intervention and also in some non-target behaviors, resulting these improvements in both, matches and practices. These improvements are evident not only in coaches of young players but also with the senior team coach. As a future line of work, it is suggested, first, to apply the PAPE to coaches from different sports and ages, and, secondly, following the recommendations that are provided in this study to apply the PAPE in the field of Physical Education, investigating changes not only in teachers but also in students.
