This doctoral thesis investigates mass violence in Africa and Asia in the second half of the 20th century. For this purpose, three cases are analysed: South Korea between 1947 and 1950, Indonesia in 1965 and Rwanda in 1994. The research distances itself from interpretative frameworks that focus exclusively on the state and identity motivations, and proposes a multi-causal reading that considers both the colonial legacy and internal social dynamics as well as the international context. The use of the concept of mass violence broadens the analytical field towards a greater diversity of actors, causes and logics for interpreting contemporary manifestations of extreme violence.
