Convergencias y divergencias sociodemográficas en el sistema residencial bogotano

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

The work addresses the relationship between population, housing and territory, emphasizing the role of households and their demographic behaviors in the residential system of Bogotá, Colombia. It follows the hypothesis that there are dual systems, among which there is a gradual continuum of social differentiation, constituted by processes of demographic convergence and urban transformation. Seeking to account for socio-spatial heterogeneity, we analyzed the way in which residential demand is organized in different types of households throughout the life course, their spatial disposition and demographic segregation conditions, their relationship with housing and, finally , all this, deepened in the context of the city produced informally. The 2005 census microdata was analyzed, which, due to its level of detail, allows the approach to intra-urban diversity, through tools of descriptive statistics (principal component analysis and clusters) and inferential (logistic regression models), of the analysis spatial (spatial autocorrelation) and geostatistics (GWR). The results allowed us to demonstrate that the dichotomous view of residential systems only manages to explain the contrasts between the furthest extremes in the social scale, which, however, also present some convergences. Additionally, there is a heterogeneity that is not entirely reflected in the duality, referring to the residential behaviors of the sectors of medium and medium low social level. It was found that the residential arrangements of the richest groups respond to a lower need for mutual support within the homes, or between them, within the kinship network, which can be expanded in the urban space, consolidating simpler homes, with low complexity, with more nuclear and modern residential typologies. These life forms are located in formally produced areas and dwellings and reveal greater demographic segregation. On the other hand, the poorest groups, whose family structures are more flexible and with greater dependence on their support networks, place them inside the household or dwelling- through cohabitation - revealing complexity and various forms of closeness, located in also flexible housing, allowed by informality. This is situaded in the most distant areas of the city, and allows the proximity of family networks, which are necessary, showing less demographic segregation. It was also identified that, the process of generalized replacement of the residential typology of the house to the apartment, has been accompanied by a transformation of the types and sizes of the households, which has generated differentiated geographies within the city. Finally, the results on residential arrangements in areas of informal urban origin show that this has an effect on the forms of family organization, by producing a dwelling that adapts and transforms according to the needs of the household. This characteristic remains in time and subsists after state interventions that seek formalization. Based on the above, inputs for public policy were produced at the micro territorial level, where the elements of the residential system are combined in various ways, producing specific residential practices.
