The purpose of this paper is, on the one hand, to make a state of the art on the fantastic in Italian literary production from Unification to the beginning of the First World War and, on the other hand, to outline a poetics of the fantastic in Italy, extrapolating, from a wide set of works analyzed, both the characteristics that bring them closer to other European works, and their own idiosyncrasies, themes and motifs that set them apart.
