Abstract

The diagnosis of breast cancer is a highly stressful experience that affects the mental health of patients. It is estimated that 1 in 8 Spanish women may suffer from breast cancer at some point in their lives and its diagnosis is a highly stressful experience that affects the mental health of patients. Virtual reality has proven effective in reducing anxiety._x000D_ This research thesis was to demonstrate the effectiveness of implementing an intervention protocol using virtual reality as a vehicle for the control of anticipatory anxiety and depression in patients with breast cancer who were going to receive their dose of chemotherapy._x000D_ _x000D_ The study design included the participation of 133 patients in which it was carried out in the Oncology Care and Advice Unit (UCCO) of the CIMA Campus, Milenium Iradier Medical Center (Barcelona, Spain) received a psychological intervention through of virtual reality. All patients received intervention with the same psychological treatment program based on mindfulness. The experimental group received the intervention through a VR program and the control group received a psychoeducation intervention._x000D_ _x000D_ The results obtained conclude that a psychosociological intervention protocol based on virtual reality improves anticipatory anxiety, depression and emotional discomfort in patients who must start their first chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.
