Abendu santu honetan: discursos y prácticas en las rondas cantadas navideñas de Bizkaia

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

This research constitutes a comparative ethnomusicological study of the sung Christmas rondas that in Bizkaia are included under the generic name of abendua or marijesiak. The ethnographic study of musical situations seeks to reveal the diverse motivations of the actors, as well as the way in which their visions have transformed and continue to reshape the musical activities studied. This work describes how the changes in the profile of the participants and in the functionalities of the rondas have been accompanied by sound transformations related to the technique and aesthetics of singing. In this sense, the results of the structural analysis of the music are articulated with the results of the ethnographic study. Likewise, it provides detailed information about the context of origin of the marijesiak and their dissemination in recent centuries, while we integrate the realities studied in a broad cultural field of Catholic-Latin and multipart practices. It pays special attention to the processes of secularization, formalization and patrimonialization of recent decades.
