Youth and insecurity from an intersectional perspective: the case of Catalonia

Abstract

This article contributes to debates on new social risks by examiningthe relationship young Catalan people have with various forms ofinsecurity. Using a mixed-methods approach in an intersectionalanalytical framework, the study uses data from the 2017 CatalanYouth Survey in combination with 15 life history interviews toinvestigate the lived experiences of vulnerable youth in Catalonia.By introducing a novel multidimensional measure of insecurityand providing robust new findings on individual-levelexperiences of various types of insecurity among Catalan youth,the study makes an important empirical contribution to theliterature while providing new theoretical insights onintersectional approaches to the analysis and conceptualization ofinsecurity.
