Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to analyse gender's role in Spanish agriculture, especially in the family farm. Firstly a deeper conceptualisation of work is sought to establish guidelines for statistical data collection. Afterwards, women's role in agricultural activities is approached through the published data of the Agrarian Census of 1982. This census is almost the only source for a detailed study of women's contribution to agriculture but it has severe limitations as it uses inadequate statistical categories for women's work. Particularly, the category "Family Help' is used in data collection and it leads to an exaggeration of the number of women working part-time and not having the status of active worker. -English summary
