Vacuum alignment in multi-scalar models

Abstract

A common assumption in any extension of the Higgs sector of the standard model is that the photon remains massless, which is necesarily true in the standard model with only one Higgs doublet. We analyze under which conditions this happens for extensions of the standard model with two scalar doublets, and with additional singlets or triplets, including the supersymmetric case. We find that certain extended models also have a massless photon for the whole parameter range. We also find a relation between the vacuum alignment and the appearance of spontaneous CP violation. © 1992.
