Abstract

© 2015 Sociedad Española de Cardiología. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have produced new guidelines on cholesterol levels and the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease that represent a paradigm shift in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia because they abandon the use of the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level as the therapeutic target and focus instead on the clinical benefits of statins. This article presents the key features of these guidelines and highlights both their strengths and areas open to improvement.
