Abstract
This paper proposes that Velazquez's famous painting, The Surrender of Breda, is based on an engraving made by the workshop of Frans Hogenberg (ca. 1530-1590), which depicts the friendly encounter between Ambrosio Spínola and Maurice of Nassau in February 1608.
