Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to show how a syntactic approach can accommodate in a natural way the main empirical generalisations formulated within morphological theories in their study of impoverished clitic clusters, as well as to show that a syntactic approach accounts for one extra property. We will argue that, when two clitics compete for the same syntactic space, a minimally bigger structure that contains the two clitics is used, if available inside the space of the clitic area.
