N2 - Long-range forces coupled to lepton number would induce a time delay among the electronic antineutrinos that reached the Earth from SN1987A. Hence, the time spread of the antineutrino burst probes the direct coupling of neutrinos to a new force over intergalactic distances. We deduce from the observed energies and arrival times of the detected antineutrinos that αL≤2×10-40 whereas αL is the "leptonic fine structure constant". © 1988.
