Abstract

Retracing the reception of Messiaen’s music in Spain is a very difficult task. Achieving a coherent panorama is hindered by the scarcity of its programming, the paucity of Spanish-language references to the European avant-garde, and the ideological and aesthetic premises in force among music critics and musicologists. Nevertheless, exploring the reception of Messiaen in Spain reveals much about late twentieth-century Spanish musical tastes and broadens the sources available to Messiaen scholars.
