Abstract

Beaches are both vulnerable areas and, highly appreciated leisure areas used by the majority of the population, and in particular, of the population of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region. Little information exists on the users on the beaches, on the use made of them, and the reasons for it. With a view to their better management, it is also necessary to understand the users' perception and expectations. The methodology applied in this study has made it possible to analyse the characteristics of users' perception of the services and facilities provided and to evaluate the perception of various environmental aspects of the beaches. There are obvious contradictions in such areas. Users recognise beaches as a socially necessary leisure resource, but are, at the same time unaware of their vulnerability. The priority problems are still urbanistic or environmental, but not related to the beach area as such, but rather to the Metropolitan Area of the region as a whole, in which the beaches are included. -from English summary
