N2 - The metal-insulator transition in GdBaCo2O5.5 at TMI≈360 K has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. We have found that, at TMI remarkable structural distortions and magnetic changes take place. These changes evidence a spin state transition of Co ions at this temperature that is the origin of the metal-insulator transition. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
