Abstract

© 1996 Christopher Hill, the edited collection; individual contributions and 1996 the contributors. Spain’s accession to the European Community, and therefore to European Political Cooperation (EPC), has inside the country the significance of an ‘historical solution’. In effect the participation of Spain in the Community means the end of a ‘national trauma’ which began in 1898. This date went down in Spain’s history as the year of the big colonial defeat (Cuba and Philippines) and at the same time as the origin of an important cultural and intellectual movement.
