Based on a historical revision of the comparative methods in the discipline, this article describes the theoretical background of parenthood. The term parenthood became common after the crisis of the classical theory of kinship. Emergent ethnographies related to the wide diversity of parental roles have yield since the 70’s to a need of new theoretical frameworks. In spite of the ethnographic variability, this article argues that it is possible to compare the different ethnographies of parenthood through structural constructions, where relational explanations and interpretations are integrate.
