Abstract

Secondary education in Spain is structured into two parts. Lower secondary -education (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria) is compulsory and lasts over four school years divided into two cycles each of 2 years. It begins after the conclusion of primary school at the age of 12; therefore, when a student finishes compulsory education, he or she is 16 years old. After this period, upper secondary education begins, which includes three main tracks: the academic (baccalaureate), the professional and the occupational. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
