Abstract
After placing the origins of Spanish educational centralism in the 18 th century, the author goes on to study the first attempts to construct Catalan schooling from the end of the 19th century - under the monarchy, then the republic - and exposes the close link between these attempts and the will to modernize pedagogy. After being halted by the anti-regionalist repression of the Franco dictatorship, the move towards the "Catalanization" of schools, which has resumed since the return to democracy, thus has roots dating back more than a century.
