Quantum chains with a spin

    An innovative method to measure and control the magnetic interaction between single atomic spins was investigated. Quantum properties of this system depend on the number of atoms involved and on the fine-tuning of material parameters, including the mixing of electronic states between chain and substrates, and the interaction between Mn spins. Hirjibehedin and colleagues used an elegant bottom-up approach to make the spin arranged at leisure on a substrate. They also provided a method of reading and modifying their spin states to investigate the most fundamental magnetic interactions in matter.
