This chapter aims at providing a general overview of the development of the European Employment Strategy and its revision in the context of the economic crisis. The paper also looks at employment policies followed by some member states as a reaction to the economic crisis and to what extent have been influenced by European guidelines. In a context of persistent institutional diversity, there has also been significant variation across policies implemented by member states which have very often departed from EU-level recommendations.
