Abstract

A versatile and disposable cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)-based point-of-care (POC) microfluidic platform is hereby presented for the potentiometric determination in blood of NH4+ or other key nitrogenous biomolecules related to inherited metabolic diseases (IMD). Maximum selectivity has been achieved thanks to passive pretreatment stages. High versatility of the microfluidic platform has been demonstrated by the optimization and characterization of the analysis of two model analytes: ammonium (direct determination) and urea (indirect determination using urease). Very promising results have been obtained to progress towards a microanalyzer that could be used by the patient himself for at-home diseases monitoring.
