Abstract

A cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)-based continuous flow potentiometric point-of-care (POC) microanalyzer is hereby presented for the bedside determination of ammonium ion in plasma of patients affected by diseases causing hyperammonemia episodes, such as urea cycle disorders (UCDs). The microanalyzer integrates microfluidics, a potentiometric detection system with an ammonium ion selective electrode (ISE) and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode, and a gas diffusion membrane to enhance selectivity avoiding matrix interferences. Real samples have been analyzed obtaining highly promising results.
