Poetry translations of El Mall. A balance

Abstract

The aim of this article is to highlight the historical importance which the published works of El Mall had in the Catalan literary and publishing context of the 70s and 80s, and especially underline the most remarkable quality and quantity of the translated poetry of foreign authors as they appeared in the collections «Llibres del Mall» and «Poesia del segle XX». The main titles of the collection will be considered, taking into account the diversity of national traditions that they represented, also making reference to the relevance of the prestige of the translators and of the authors of prefaces. Moreover, the paper sets out to carefully study the editing style for poetry, which turned into a well-known referent, and point out how the choice of titles promoted the symbolist and romantic canon, and its primarily European derivations, at the same time that the young poets of the group embraced it as well.
