Abstract
Garrotxí is the variety of Catalan spoken in the Garrotxa region. It belongs to the transition zone towards the Northern Catalan subdialect and therefore has features in common with both Central Catalan and Northern Catalan. The peculiarities of Garrotxí are partly due to the relative geographical isolation in which the region has lived over the centuries, but also to the close historical links with Vallespir. Despite the differences that still exist between the speech of Alta Garrotxa and the area around Olot, the regional capital has played a cohesive role in this dialect. As in other transition varieties, in recent decades there has been an interruption in the generational transmission of some features of Garrotxí; this phenomenon has been attributed to the increased mobility of younger speakers and the pressure of central or standard forms through education and the media.
