The application of the European Directive 91/271 implies the modification of various wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), which had not been designed for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Faced with this need, a redesign protocol of a WWTP for biological nutrient removal is presented to make the analysis of a big number of possible alternatives in a short time interval. This article also describes the application of the protocol to a specific case: the revamp of the WWTP of Caldes de Montbui (Barcelona).
