On the Spinodal Line of Polymer Solutions Under Shear

Abstract

We obtain the spinodal line of polymer solutions under shear by introducing viscous effects in the Gibbs function and using the experimental values obtained by Wolf et al. [5, 11-13] for the flow curves. In contrast with the usual idea that a shear either enhances or decreases the solubility of a system, we show that it could have both effects in the same system, depending on the composition. We stress the crucial role of the equilibrium contributions in determining the shear-induced shift of the spinodal line. © Copyright 1993 Walter de Gruyter
