Abstract
In many situations of physical interest, the dissipative fluxes may be considered as a sum of an infinite number of terms or an integral. The formalism of extended irreversible thermodynamics (EIT) is generalized to cover these situations. Several kinds of memory functions of special physical interest, such as the stretched exponential or the potential ones, find in the present formulation of EIT a natural place. As simple illustrations, the formal development is applied to charged suspensions, porous media and monatomic ideal gases.
